The Interceptor was born out of the demise of the large capacity Austin-Healey, which had been such a long-running export success story for BMC, for whom Jensen had done much sub-contract work. The Midlands firm had already employed a US Chrysler V8 to power its GRP-bodied CV8 and, in 1966, came up with their new model based on the CV8, but with Italian-styled bodywork in steel, with a much more costly FF version with Ferguson four-wheel drive coming out at the same time.
This particular Interceptor - a right-hand drive MkIII two-door with model feature and extremely useful opening rear-window and a 72,900 total mileage displayed when entered for this auction - first left Jensen's West Bromwich works in July 1973 and has been in the last ownership from 1995.
Rated by the entrant as being a very nice example of this distinctively shaped classic, the bodywork is finished in metallic Burgundy with contrasting beige roof, described by him as being very good, and matching magnolia leather interior, again said to be in good condition. The alloy wheels are reportedly in good order, too, as are the 7212cc eight-cylinder engine, the four-speed automatic transmission and the electrical equipment.
The vendor tells us that he was hopeful that a near twelve month's worth of MOT time is likely to be in place by sale day and potential new owners are therefore advised to check out the latest certificate details by inspecting the car's paperwork in our documents office at the Buxton sale venue.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
