"Even we - distributors - never realised how remarkably advanced the 'Twenty' Armstrong Siddeley was until we took it for several hundred miles recently. The engine yields a vastly improved power output. The impressive suspension is really silk-like. The gearbox is incredible and even the traditional Armstrong Siddeley comfort features have been added to and improved. For dignified, exceptional comfort and safe, quick travelling we strongly recommend you try this 20hp Armstrong Siddeley" (Warwick Wright Ltd of Mayfair advertisement, 1935).
Introduced in 1932, the 'New 20' boasted a revised chassis design with a 4'10" track (wider than that used on any previous Armstrong Siddeley model). Equipped with well resolved semi-elliptic leaf sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes, this cross-braced, ladder frame platform was powered by a new 3190cc, ohv six-cylinder engine. Available with a choice of four-speed manual or pre-selector transmissions (the latter standardised the following year), it was priced at £550 and reputedly capable of over 73mph.
Finished in beige-brown with what is thought to be its original brown leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in good overall condition. Believed but not warranted by him to have covered 71,000 miles from new, it has been subject to an extensive restoration over the last eight years at a reputed cost of £26,000. Carrying a valid MOT certificate until September 2005, this rare surviving sports saloon is also offered for sale with its original logbook, handbook and assorted rebuild invoices.
PLEASE NOTE: There has been a slight change to this vehicles description from the catalogue. The previous owner sold the car due to health problems, not the current owner, and the restoration was at a cost of £26,000 with all bills reportedly available in the history file.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
