Taking six years to progress from drawing board to production line, the Volvo 140-series was introduced on 16th August 1966. Styled in-house by Jan Wilsgaard, its robust monocoque bodyshell boasted front / rear crumple zones and a built-in rollover bar (concealed within the roof lining). While other passive safety features included: anti-burst door locks, a collapsible steering column and front headrests. Equipped with independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension, a twin trailing-arm located 'live' rear axle and cam-and-peg steering the new model also gained dual-circuit four-wheel disc brakes. Powered by a range of torquey 1.8 litre (B18) and 2.0 litre (B20) four-cylinder OHV engines, most variants were capable of over 90mph. Famed for their ability to withstand Scandinavian winters and clock up huge mileages, 140-series cars were also surprisingly comfortable benefiting from reclining front seats and fully carpeted interiors as standard.
Finished in green with brown upholstery, this particular example is believed but not warranted to have covered just 35,514 miles from new. Said to have had "one very careful owner" and to have been "garaged all its life but not used since 2002", 'TUK 443L' supposedly needed just a single hour's recommissioning prior to passing a MOT test earlier this summer. As well as stating that "the bodywork is in incredible condition for its age - rust what rust?" the vendor adds "the paintwork and brightwork are almost faultless, the interior likewise except for a mysterious split in one front squab". While, he goes on to say "the condition of the engine, gearbox, back axle and running gear is commensurate with a car having covered such a small mileage. All tyres have been renewed at some time and have only 10% wear". Reportedly "fitted with a radio when new, and complete with spare filters, brake pads, fan belt, hoses etc (all apparently purchased circa 1975!)", we are further informed that the saloon "will be driven 90 miles to the auction with no qualms". Thought to have the makings of a potential concours contender, this remarkable Volvo is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until June 25th 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
