Jaguar certainly produced a groundbreaking production sportscar when they came up with the E- Type, which not only replaced their hugely successful, though becoming rather dated XK120/140/150 line, but also evocatively re-enacted many of the lines of the Le Mans winning D-Type. The first cars hit the showrooms in 1961, initially with the 3.8 XK power units, though soon with capacity increased to 4.2-litres.
Thanks to aerodynamically slippery bodywork of both open sports and closed coupe body styles - offered initially with faired-in headlamp cowls - E-Type performance was sensational and the model instantly achieved legendary status. For those early E-Type owners could enjoy 150mph performance for less than £2100 (by comparison, the rival DB4 from Aston Martin cost a thumping £3755!).
This E-Type 4.2 first left the Browns Lane works in 1966 as a fixed head coupe, though at some time it has been professionally converted into an open roadster. In red with black leather interior, it has been in the present ownership for the past twenty-five years, during which time, he claims, the car has been carefully preserved.
Indeed, our understanding is that LFM 22D has been always exercised sparingly and never subjected to the rain. Check out the current condition of monocoque and sub frame for yourself. Also reportedly good are body panels, paintwork, wire wheels and interior, whilst both 4.2 six and four-speed manual gearbox are said to be in good order as are the electrical items.
An open red E-Type Jag has become one of the all time British classics. This is your chance to own one.
