When Bentley introduced their first S Series model in 1955, enhancing comfort, elegance, performance and road holding, the motoring press enthused that the new car offered "a degree of safety, comfort and performance that is beyond the experience and imagination of the world's motorists-which rose as a magic carpet, annihilating great distances."
Even the first S Series, the S1, was reckoned to represent a huge improvement on previous products from the Crewe works, providing enhanced comfort, elegance, performance and road holding. The S2 was introduced in 1959 with 6230cc eight-cylinder engine which was to remain largely unchanged until 1970 (when capacity was increased to 6750cc), whilst the third generation S Series came to market in 1962 as the Bentley S3 or the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III.
A lower radiator shell enabled there to be a more pronounced shape in the bonnet line. The most important changes, however, were within the overhead valve engine, with reworked cylinder heads being cast from a new alloy that included silicon. Larger HD8 SU carbs were employed and compression ration raised to 9:1, resulting in a power increase to 200bhp at 4500rpm.
This 1964 right-hand drive S3 with factory-built standard steel four-door saloon bodywork is in light blue with blue leather interior. Although in need of some cosmetic TLC, the V8 motor is claimed by the vendor to be in very good order. There are some invoices on file, he says, detailing work carried out. Bentley chassis number B362 EC is being sold, too, with the desirable 3644 RA registration in place.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
