1950 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible

Sold for £20,250

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: PFF 684
Chassis No: HAM264578
Mot Expiry: None

Chevrolet's bright, jaunty new sedans kept it in front of Ford for 1950, launching a neat new body style that would last through 1952. As well as the smooth straight-six power, there was the option of two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, and 'hardtop convertible' and full convertible body styles, as here, joined the sedan. The car, imported from the US some years ago, has been extensively refurbished and prepared for long-distance endurance rallies at a cost of £35,000 - but also offers the opportunity for easy restoration back to original. Its most recent event was the 2007 Peking-Paris Motor Challenge, tracing the original 1907 route of Prince Borghese across the Gobi Desert, Inner and Outer Mongolia, Russian Steppes to Moscow and into Europe, where it finished sixth overall, also collecting a Gold award.

Manual-transmission cars were powered by the 216cu in (3.5 litre) version of the 'Stovebolt' six engine but this one has been fitted with an uprated 232cu in (3.8 litre) pressure-fed engine, usually found in the automatic version, which has been extensively overhauled by one of the country's leading rally preparation specialists. Other modifications include: strengthened rear suspension with double shock absorbers; 12-volt electrics with double coil and double fuel pump, 28-gallon tank; specially built storage bins; full harnesses; new side exhaust; sump and tank guards; set of 51/2in wheels with All Terrain tyres; set of 5in wheels with crossply tyres; Terratrip, multiple jack plug connections - in interior, engine compartment and boot; aluminium footrest; air horns with passenger foot control; towing eyes front and rear; most nuts replaced with Nylocs.

The vendor describes the car as "excellent" in nearly all respects, but points out that the gearbox needs some renovation - a 'box rebuild is $450 at US specialist Chevs of the '40s - one front wishbone requires repairing and the original front shock absorbers require refitting (new brackets are $12 each from Chevs of the '40s). There is a small tear approx 50x30mm in the hood. In addition, there are a couple of 'dings' - one by the offside headlamp, and one on the wing near the joint with the windscreen. Both have been rubbed down and painted, but will need the touch of a professional to return to perfect condition. The car comes with its original chrome bumpers, over-riders and headlamp covers, plus carpets and unused restored seats that were removed and stored before the rally. The many spares include fanbelt, hoses, clutch plate, wheel bearings and halfshafts. Please note that the rally plates are not included in the sale.

All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.

You can collect your new pride and joy from our venue until 1pm the day following the sale or our partners are on hand to help arrange safe transportation:
