Founded by James Lansdowne Norton, Norton has become one of the legendary marques of the once great British motorcycle industry. A Norton v-twin won the 2-cylinder class of the 1907 IOM TT. By 1924, Norton had won both the Senior and Sidecar TTs.
The Commando, a fast and refined version of Norton's parallel twin, was introduced in the late 1960s. Early models were of 750cc capacity and were good for 120mph. 1973 saw an improved 828cc version with rubber-mounted engine to combat vibration. Aimed at the US market and intended to take on the Japanese competition, the 1975-launched Mk3 had an electric starter and discs brakes front and rear. By 1977, however, the NVT Wolverhampton factory was in Official Receiver hands and Commando production finally ended.
The vendor of the 1976-built Interstate III on offer here tells us that he has owned this classic British superbike since 1990. It is to factory-spec, apart from uprated alloy rims. The condition of red paint and brightwork are reportedly good and the 828cc 2-cylinder engine in good order.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
