The Douglas Bros, who started up in 1906, acquired the design of a flat-twin engine from J Barter's defunct Light Motor Company, Barter coming to work for Douglas. Having two cylinders horizontally-opposed 180 degrees to each other was much the same elegant solution to twin-cylinder engine design as adopted by over fifty other motor motorcycle manufacturers, although Douglas chose a longitudinal layout for their early twins.
This Douglas, a Dragonfly 350, was first restored in 1981 prior to 1983 purchase by the vendor. Having been ridden extensively on VMCC events throughout the 1980s, the bike was then recommissioned by a leading specialist well known to the members of the London Douglas MC in 2002, since when it has always been kept in dry conditions within a dehumidified garage and has only been exercised sparingly.
Current condition of frame, cycle parts and suspension components as well as black and silver paintwork are described as good with 347cc capacity two-cylinder engine and transmission reportedly both in good working order. The current MOT certificate and tax disc are both valid until December, so a full season of events can be enjoyed on this delightful machine.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
