Lot details Registration No: E652XUA Chassis No: SAJJNAEC3CA150523 Mot Expiry: May 2011
Introduced in October 1983, the Jaguar XJS 3.6 was intended to be a sharper, more sporting foil to the range's established, soporific 5.3 litre V12 model. To emphasise the difference, it was fitted with a five-speed manual Getrag gearbox as standard (though, automatic transmission was optional). With some 225bhp and 240lbft of torque on tap courtesy of its 3590cc DOHC 24 valve straight-six, the claimed 140mph top speed and 0-60mph time of 7.4 seconds were a near match for the V12. Yet when such performance was not called upon, it could reputedly return thirty miles per gallon, a feat beyond the V12's capabilities. The brand new AJ6 unit also had the advantage of being considerably lighter. This weight saving allowed Jaguar engineers to alter the all-round independent suspension's coil-spring rates giving notably better turn-in and less body roll. A revised, more positive feel to the power steering improved the handling still further. Available in coupe or cabriolet guises (Jaguar's first open car since the Series III E-type was phased out in 1974), the 3.6 was a strong seller.
Finished in Signal Red with black leather upholstery, this particular example was reportedly treated to "an extensive and expensive professional restoration in 2009 by the present owner". Prior to being given a full respray in its original hue, the bodywork is understood to have received attention to its "inner rear wheelarches, sill ends, floor sections, front / rear quarters and splash panels". While mechanically the Jaguar apparently benefited from the removal and refurbishment of its rear subframe assembly (new mounting rubbers, radius arms, brake discs / seals / pipes), a front suspension overhaul and sundry engine fettling (new oil cooler, thermostat, crank sensor, manifold gaskets, plugs, hoses, V-belts, filters and renewed fuel injectors) not to mention an oil change and engine bay detailing. Riding on rejuvenated lattice alloy wheels, the XJS is said to possess "smooth automatic transmission" and a "sweet running engine with good oil pressure". Further boasting "an excellent original interior" and "unmarked boot area" as well as "service history with old MOTs and original handbooks", we are informed that 'E652 XUA' has previously been "re-registered on two occasions bringing its total number of former keepers to five". Nicely presented and seemingly well looked after during the current ownership, this stylish Jaguar is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until May 2011 and road tax valid until December 2010.
