The postwar Bentleys became increasingly difficult to differentiate from their Rolls-Royce equivalents through being forced to share design and engineering expertise, components and production facilities. The Bentley MkVI was announced for a WW2 luxury and performance car starved UK home market in Spring 1946. Initially, it shared basically the same 4257cc engine with the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith. This was a prewar design, through with inlet over exhaust valve layout, whilst at least Bentley motors had high-lift cams and twin carbs.
This 1947-built MkVI would certainly appear to have been well looked after, having passed through the hands of leading marque specialists P&A Wood in 1987. On file are a letter from a previous keeper, giving details of his ownership from 1982, previous MOTs from 1986 to date, as well as a copy of the original logbook.
The factory-built 4-door saloon bodywork and black paintwork are said to be in very good unrestored condition, and the same description applies to the light brown interior. Both 6-cylinder motor and 4-speed manual gearbox are reportedly in very good order.
The 56,266 miles indicated when entered is believed to be the genuine total for this car which, reportedly, displays lovely patina. Neither tax disc nor MOT will require renewal until November next year. When appraised by Classic Cars magazine for a recent issue, this particular saloon was judged best in trio when compared with Jaguar and Alvis alternatives in the spec/price range. Independent praise indeed!
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
