Essentially a customer version of Barry Sheene's 1976 World Championship winning XR14 Works bike, the RG500 MK2 appeared the following year. Powered by Suzuki's legendary water-cooled square-four two-stroke engine mated to six-speed transmission, its tubular swing-arm frame utilised twin rear shock absorbers and front / rear disc brakes. Developing an impressive 103bhp @ 10,750rpm thanks to its sophisticated rotary disc valve induction system, it was arguably the best 'over-the-counter' 500cc Grand Prix racer of its generation and was soon dubbed the 'modern-day Manx Norton. Highly sought after, less than ten RG500 MK2s are thought to have been officially imported into the UK.
Reportedly professionally restored to original specification, this particular example features a contemporary Lockheed front brake master cylinder. Finished in blue over white, it was recently in the possession of ex-Suzuki team rider Stan Woods and still carries his signature on its petrol tank. A rare machine that evokes memories of both Barry Sheene and the immortal XR14, it would enhance many a collection.
