A development of the Corniche, the new Bentley Continental was introduced in 1984. Based like its predecessor around a two-door monocoque bodyshell equipped with fully independent suspension (self-levelling to the rear), four-wheel disc brakes and rack and pinion steering, it was powered by a tuned version of Crewe's staple 6750cc V8 engine mated to automatic transmission. Trimmed with the finest hides, wood veneers and lambswool carpets available, its sumptuous interior also boasted a power hood, split level air conditioning and numerous electric motors.
Finished in Tudor Red with Parchment leather upholstery (piped in red), this particular example was supplied new to famous rock star and car enthusiast Sir Elton John. Featured in the video for his 1985 hit single 'Nikita' and consequently on the great musician's 'Greatest Hits' video, it has covered a mere 33,500 miles from new. Riding on renewed alloy wheels, it also benefits from a boot-mounted ten-disc CD player and extra speakers. Sporting the registration number 'B20 ELT', the Bentley's appearance is further distinguished by a Flying 'B' mascot and colour-coded radiator grille slats. Pampered by Sir Elton John between 1985 and 2000, the Continental is described by the vendor as still being in "A1" condition with regard to its engine, automatic gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. A desirable piece of motoring and pop music history, this coachbuilt drophead coupe is offered for sale with history file and MOT certificate valid until May 2007.
