Lot details Registration No: 6464 WF Chassis No: SYD126 Mot Expiry: Feb 2006
Launched in 1959, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II and its sister car the Bentley S2 were seemingly visually interchangeable with the outgoing Cloud I and S1 models. Although, underpinned by the same chassis layout as their predecessors (complete with independent coil and wishbone front suspension, leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle and all round, servo assisted drum brakes), the duo boasted an all-new powerplant. Rolls-Royce's first V8 engine since the Edwardian 30HP 'Legalimit', the 6230cc unit gave notable improvements in both power and flexibility. Suddenly, these wonderfully elegant if un-aerodynamic saloons were capable of close to 120mph via their four-speed automatic gearboxes. A strong sales success, especially in the USA, the Cloud II's introduction led David Ogilvy's advertising agency to produce the classic tag line "At 60 mph the loudest noise in this new Rolls-Royce comes from the electric clock".
Finished in nutmeg / sand with beige leather upholstery, this particular example is variously rated by the vendor as being in average (interior trim), good (chassis, transmission, paintwork, wheels/ tyres) or very good (engine, electrical equipment, bodywork) condition. Fitted with later Cloud III / S3 front wings complete with quad headlamps, it is said to have had "one former keeper since 1978" and to have been "repainted in approximately 1972". Believed but not warranted to have covered 106,000 miles from new, it retains "some tools" but "no history or handbook". A real dowager of a motor car, it is offered for sale with MOT certificate current until February 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until 31st July 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
