By switching to Bosch fuel injection in March 1981 Ferrari robbed its successful 308 GTB / GTS models of some forty horsepower. Worried about the consequent loss of performance, Maranello executive Eugenio Alzati determined to give the 90-degree 'quad-cam' 2926cc V8 its teeth back. Announced in October 1982, the new QV or 'quattrovalve' model was a revelation. Sporting - as its name suggests - four-valve cylinder heads, it was credited with developing some 240bhp and 192lbft of torque. Emissions friendly, it nevertheless boasted less noise, more power and better throttle response than its predecessor. Reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds and 158mph, the QV cars once again had the raw speed to match their sublime Pininfarina sculpted looks.
Finished in red with black leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the present keeper as being in either very good (electrical equipment, interior trim) or excellent (engine, five-speed manual gearbox, chassis, bodywork, paintwork, wheels / tyres) condition. Supplied new by the Colemore Ferrari Centre of West Bromwich to a Mr Rigby, A970 HPF also underwent its first service with them. Though, its five subsequent services have been variously performed by: Modena - East Horsley, Emblem Sports Cars - Blandford, Nigel Mansell Sports Cars - Blandford Forum and Aero Anglia Ltd (the CAA Licensed Aircraft Engineer vendor's own company). With its previous owner for around sixteen years, it has reportedly "covered just under 4,000 completely trouble free miles" since being acquired in March 2003. Said to "drive very well with virtually no baulking from first to second gear when cold" and to "use very little oil (oil pressure 80-85psi hot), it is shod with correct type Michelin TRX tyres all round (including the spare). Believed but not guaranteed to have covered 23,700 miles from new, this rare 308 GTBi QV (reputed to be one of just 748 sold worldwide) is offered for sale with "original tool kit, service book, wallet" and MOT certificate valid until November 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
