Lot details Registration No: 4584 JW Chassis No: GHN/97272 Mot Expiry: June 2009
Introduced in Autumn 1955, the MGA Roadster married a proven chassis design derived from its TD/TF predecessors (independent coil and wishbone front suspension and a 'live' rear axle) to the new B-series four-cylinder, pushrod-ohv engine first seen in the Magnette saloon. Borrowing cues from the Abingdon factory's successful EX182 prototype racers (fifth and sixth in class at that year's Le Mans) its wonderfully elegant styling ensured strong sales on both sides of the Atlantic. Continually updated, the MGA range was joined by Coupe and 'Twin Cam' variants in 1956 and 1958 respectively. Prompted by the latter's performance advantage, the standard pushrod model received a capacity increase to 1588cc and front disc brakes in May 1959. Equipped with a four-speed manual gearbox and rack and pinion steering as standard, the resultant '1600' MKI was reputedly capable of 100mph plus.
Finished in red with black upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Said to have spent some time abroad but to have been re-united with the transferable Wolverhampton registration number '4584 JW' upon its return to the UK during 1977, the Roadster is further understood to have been the subject of "a body-off restoration to a high standard in 2003". Reportedly treated to "light summer use and dry storage since", it is stated to "drive very well" and to have "proven reliable". Riding on wire wheels, the MG boasts red piping to its black leather seats, black carpets and a black hood / sidescreens. Eligible for historic class (free) road tax, this appealing MGA 1600 is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until June 2009.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
