Lot details Registration No: TBW718P Chassis No: GHN5-405959G Mot Expiry: May 2007
Introduced in 1962, the MGB Roadster enjoyed an eighteen-year production run. With nicely balanced handling and a good turn of speed, it merited the old MG marketing slogan 'Safety Fast'. Its monocoque chassis featured independent coil-sprung front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle. The 1798cc 'B' series four-cylinder engine and four-speed manual gearbox gave a top speed in excess of 100mph, while disc/drum brakes and rack and pinion steering aided control. Today, it enjoys a very strong following and with its GT sister has spawned a dedicated support industry making it among the most practical and cost effective of all classic cars.
Finished in British Racing Green with black leather / vinyl upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good-to-excellent" (interior trim), "excellent" (electrical equipment, chassis, bodywork), "rebuilt" (engine) or "new" (paintwork, wheels / tyres) condition. Although, it began life as a 'rubber bumper' car, 'TBW 718P' was reportedly converted to 'chrome bumper' specification during a recent "total rebuild". Taken back to bare metal, its bodyshell is said to have been "resprayed by a specialist in Sheffield" and fitted with "new springs to match bumpers / wheels". Apparently benefiting from an engine overhaul (including conversion to unleaded fuel) and replacement four-speed manual gearbox / overdrive, the MG is understood to have covered some 2,000 miles since work was completed. Still retaining its "original soft-top and tonneau cover", this well presented roadster is offered for sale with sundry receipts and MOT certificate valid until May 2nd 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
