Lot details Registration No: TYW 480 Chassis No: L/B207CM Mot Expiry: May 2015
According to the research of previous owner Ian Dixon Potter of Maida Vale, London, only three Bentley S1s were built to the design No. B20SR, of which 'TYW 480' is one. Its first keeper was Percy C Henderson of Little Warley, Essex, who had reputedly ordered a James Young four-door Saloon from Jack Barclay, but changed his mind at the last minute, having seen a Coupe under construction - he duly took delivery of 'TWY 480' in May 1957. Other early owners are understood to have been J.F. Howes FRIBA of Howes and Jackman Architects, Greys Inn, London, and Colonel A.B. McGhee of Wimbledon. The Bentley evidently had a lengthy period in America during the 1980s before being repatriated at the end of the decade and reunited with its original registration. Owners have subsequently included Richard John Edwards of Telford (1989), John C Brown of Letchworth (1991) and the aforementioned Ian Dixon Potter.
Sporting Glasso Green Coachwork teamed with Green hide interior trim, the vendor currently grades the two-door bodywork and paintwork as 'good' and the 4.9-litre straight six engine and three-speed automatic gearbox as 'all serviceable'. The Bentley's interesting history file includes the complete James Young build records, correspondence between the first owner, James Young and Jack Barclay, plus information on the various changes that were instituted during production. The car also comes with a selection of invoices and old MOT certificates. The indicated mileage is an unwarranted 80,427 and the current MOT remains valid into May of next year.
