Lot details Registration No: BCT955L Chassis No: CR8860 Mot Expiry: Feb 2010
The quintessential British sports car, the TR6 is the last of the separate-chassis TRs, the Michelotti-styled TR5 it was derived from being cleverly updated into this final form by Karmann of Germany; 91,850 were built between 1968 and 1976. This broad-chested sportster provides the style and aural appeal for the definitive wind-in-the hair sports car experience, though it comes as a surprise to appreciate that only 13,703 were fuel-injected, by Lucas, as types for North America, the biggest market, were fitted with twin Stromberg carburettors. Of the fuel-injected cars, 8370 were produced for the home-market, originally with 150bhp. From 1973, CR series cars like this one were retuned slightly for economy and drivability - though the power difference isn't as significant as it looks on paper as the two outputs are measured to different standards. Backing up their no-nonsense looks, CR series cars still rack up a healthy 116mph and get to 60mph from a standing start in 9.5 secs.
This particular example was restored some 20,000 miles ago, a process which reportedly saw it fitted with new Heritage panels, resprayed Pimento red, trimmed in black leather and treated to a wire wheel conversion. The history file, which reaches back to the 1980s, apparently includes twenty-three old MOTs, various restoration invoices and bills for engine, gearbox and clutch replacement. While of late the Triumph is understood to have benefited from new coil springs / Koni shock absorbers all round and fresh tyres. The vendor describes this car as being in "very good overall" condition, telling us that: "The engine, gearbox and overdrive work very well, with strong oil pressure" and that the car is "very comfortable and quiet". He concludes: "The performance and driving of this car are a pleasure. This is a true classic sports car, providing a good deal of excitement".
