During the early seventies Triumph and their sister company BSA placed a great deal of emphasis on success in the American AMA series. In the Rob North framed triples they had the perfect tools for the road racing element of the competition. The twins, using Trackmaster frames provided riders such as Dave Aldana, Dick Mann and Jim Rice with machines capable of beating the best that Harley Davidson could field on the dirt track ovals, despite a capacity disadvantage. A number of dirt track machines were built using the triple to address this. Unfortunately, despite a significant gain in power output when compared to the twins, the triples were considered to be top heavy and difficult to "hook up" on the dirt by the riders.
This example of the Trident powered version is claimed to be the only Triumph powered example. It was restored during 1997 and adapted for sprint and track use. It is believed to have been taken out to 995cc at the timeof restoration although the current owner cannot confirm this. Described as being in excellent condition throughout, it is an interesting, possibly unique machine.
