Lot details Registration No: 606 GOV Chassis No: GHN3-556 Mot Expiry: June 2006
Introduced in 1962, the MGB Roadster enjoyed an eighteen-year production run. With nicely balanced handling and a good turn of speed, it merited the old MG marketing slogan 'Safety Fast'. Its monocoque chassis featured independent coil-sprung front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle. The 1798cc 'B' series four-cylinder engine and four-speed manual gearbox gave a top speed in excess of 100mph, while disc/drum brakes and rack and pinion steering aided control. Today, it enjoys a very strong following and with its GT sister has spawned a dedicated support industry making it among the most practical and cost effective of all classic cars.
Finished in red with black vinyl upholstery (piped in white), this particular example is described by the vendor as being in good overall condition. Thought by him to be "one of the first MGB MKIs manufactured on November 1st 1962" on account of its chassis number, it has been in his possession since November 1995. Believed but not warranted to have covered 58,350 miles from new (with a mere 550 or so of those being added during the current ownership), it is said to have had the following components replaced: "batteries (x2), brake callipers, brake discs / pads, dynamo, radiator, plugs, points, condenser, coil, plug leads, clutch / brake seals, headlamp units and carburettor needles / valves". Further benefiting from an engine de-coke including "reground valves etc", its boot contains a new dark green vinyl soft-top together with the original hood frame. Sporting wire wheels, a white hardtop and positive earth period radio, '606 GOV' is offered for sale with MOT certificate current until 30th June 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until 31st July 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
