"Some day, you'll settle down with a nice, sensible girl, a nice, sensible house and a nice, sensible family saloon . . . . . Some day"
So read the MGB advertising of the early to mid 1970s. Thirty years on, the slogan "your mother wouldn't like it" rings slightly less true with the MGB now attracting a bigger following in the UK than any other old car. Due to the presence of an entire cottage industry dedicated to its survival it has ironically become a very sensible ownership proposition. Pleasant to drive with rack and pinion steering, independent coil and wishbone front suspension, disc/drum brakes and 105mph performance MGBs are easily capable of keeping pace with modern traffic. The fitment of overdrive to the four-speed manual gearbox found in most examples also gives surprisingly frugal fuel consumption and comparatively relaxed motorway cruising. Thus, a good MGB is in many ways the ideal classic.
Finished in pale blue with black leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "rebuilt" (1798cc engine), "very good" (four-speed plus overdrive manual gearbox, chassis, bodywork, paintwork), "as new" (wheels / tyres) or "new" (electrical equipment, interior trim) condition. Reportedly "an original English car with all matching numbers", 'BNE 388B' is said to have undergone a photographic refurbishment. Further understood to be "one of the first pull handle Bs" and to benefit from "a five-bearing crankshaft", it is summed up as "a great car with years of motoring left in it". Riding on wire wheels, this gorgeous MG is offered for sale with a "very large history file including photos of the rebuild" and MOT certificate valid until August 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
