The Austin A35 was not only popular with 1950s car buyers, but proved to be extremely competitive on the race track at the weekends thanks to A35 equipped drivers like Graham Hill whose Speedwell Tuning and Conversions backed car became a favourite with the huge crowds who used to attend National and club motor race meetings.
Following acquisition at one of our auctions three years ago, this low mileage A35 road car was extensively modified by BMC A Series specialists GB Performance of Sunbury for Historic Saloon Car Racing and transformed into a Speedwell A35 recreation. The over £15,000 worth of work involved attention to bodyshell and running gear, and, with Touring Car legend Steve Soper at the wheel, the completed project mixed it with Jaguar Mk2s and Lotus-Cortinas to great effect at the 2001 Goodwood Revival.
Last raced in 2002 at Goodwood, where it was driven by Rae Davis and ITV F1 pundit Tony Jardine, the car which has affectionately become known as 'The Powerful Peanut' finished 6th in the St Mary's Trophy and clocked up the fourth fastest lap. Current condition of body, blue paintwork and interior, 4-cylinder engine on twin 1 1/2 inch SUs, 4-speed straight cut close ratio gearbox, 2-piece competition halfshafts and locked differential are described as good - and, as PFF 754 has only been used for racing during current ownership, it is not currently in receipt of an MOT, though a SORN declaration has been made.
PLEASE NOTE: The Austin A35 is once again eligible, by popular demand, to take part in Goodwood for this year, although this example has not been raced since it was purchased by the present owner a couple of years ago. A spare 4.2 differential is also available with the car.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
