By recruiting the highly talented ex-Daimler engineer Charles Van Eugen in December 1922, Lea-Francis effectively signalled its intention to join the automotive mainstream. Debuting the following year, the Van-Eugen influenced D-type was notable for eschewing Coventry-Simplex sidevalve power in favour of a Meadows overhead valve unit. The first among a series of Lea Francis models that became renown for their build quality, dependability and liveliness, it was joined by E- and F-type variants in 1924. Based around a sturdy ladder-frame chassis equipped with all-round leaf-sprung suspension (semi-elliptic front / quarter-elliptic rear), rear wheel brakes and a spiral bevel back axle, the latter model was powered by a 1247cc OHV Meadows 4EB engine allied to three-speed manual transmission. Boasting an 8ft 9in wheelbase and 3ft 8in track, it could be had with a choice of two- or four-seater coachwork by the likes of Cross & Ellis and Robinsons. Although, winning an award for the best all round performance during the 1924 RAC Small Car Trials helped boost marque sales, just 100 F-types are thought to have been made before production ceased in 1925.
Finished in maroon over black with red leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. According to information gleaned from the Lea-Francis Owners' Club website (www.lfoc.org), 'TO 536' is the only F-type known to still exist. Reportedly treated to some £30,000 worth of expenditure since being discovered in a Herefordshire barn during the 1990s (including an engine overhaul by Barrie Price of Lea Francis Cars, bodywork refurbishment by Phoenix Car Restorations and thorough re-trim), it sports a dickey seat, side-mounted spare wheel, scuttle lamps and various running board accessories. Rare as the proverbial hen's teeth, this delightful Vintage tourer is offered for sale with V5 registration document and photographic restoration record.
