The rapid rise in scooter popularity during the 1960s was driven by two celebrated Italian brands, Lambretta and Vespa. The basic design concept of having small diameter wheels and a rear-engine mounted low down under the seat, with rider and passenger provided with reasonable weather protection by legshields, was never really altered - although, over the years, various changes have been made to their styling, which has always been futuristic, and such technical details as making the starter electric.
By 1980, Piaggio, makers of Vespa scooters as well as traditional Gilera motorcycles, had become the fourth largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the world. Appropriately in view of their distinctive sound, `Vespa' is Italian for wasp.
Beneath the classically shaped Vespa scooter bodywork of the PX125 model being auctioned here is an extremely controllable and, compared to motorcycles of similar capacity, relatively quiet two-stroke engine with electronic ignition and a four-speed gearbox operated by the left-side handlebar twist grip.. When new in 1987, this scooter was capable of a 65mph top speed and would have cost £1199.
Donated to the National Motor Museum Trust when brand new, this particular machine has never been registered and, until this auction, has spent its entire life carefully preserved as an exhibit on display at Beaulieu. Indeed, there can be few Vespas in the world today that have a mere nine miles on the clock, making this an unrepeatable opportunity!
Please note: As this machine has not been registered there is no V5 registration document with the machine and the successful buyer will have to register the motorcycle with DVLA themselves.
PLEASE NOTE: There is no paperwork with this motorcycle.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
