The SL, being an abbreviation of Sport Leicht, was largely engineered by the celebrated Daimler Benz boffin, Rudi Uhlenhaut, and was developed from one of the world's most enigmatic cars - the Gullwing in 1957. Discerning long distance motorists from all over the world wanted an SL of their own and the Stuttgart manufacturer has been obliging them ever since.
The West Yorkshire owner of the 1981 500SL offered here tells us that he has owned the classic roadster for the past six years and is an excellent driver. During his ownership, the vendor claims that the car has always been well maintained and, although it has not been driven much since 1999, the battery has been renewed. Unlike many SLs, this one has both hard and soft tops.
The condition of bodywork and white paintwork as well as blue interior are described as very good. The 5-litre 8-cylinder engine is reportedly excellent and there are no faults apparent with the 4-speed automatic transmission. The MOT test pass certificate is current until next September.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
