Jaguar hatched their master plan to produce a ground-breaking sportscar along the lines of their Le Mans winning D Type as a replacement for the hugely successful, though by this time becoming rather dated XK120-150 line in 1948. The resultant E Type finally reached the showrooms in 1961 in coupe or roadster form, initially with 3.8, though soon with a 4.2-lite engine.
The Derbyshire vendor tells us that the 1969-built E Type S2 4.2 offered here was imported in 1991 from the US where it had been in receipt of partial refurbishment. Since its return to the UK, the work has been completed with the roadster converted from left to righthand drive. The interior trim and hood fabric as well as some chromework, suspension bushes and coolant hoses were also renewed, the carburetors changed to a triple Weber set-up, the manual gearbox rebuilt and a new speedometer fitted. When entered for this sale, the odometer read 12,226 miles, this being the total mileage driven since restoration.
Current condition of bodywork and Old English White paintwork is claimed to be very good and red interior very very good. The 6-cylinder XK motor, the 4-speed manual transmission and all the electrical equipment are reportedly in very good order. Invoices detailing the various parts fitted and the servicing work carried out are included in the documents file, says the owner, as is a freshly issued MOT certificate.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
