Lot details Registration No: TBF562W Chassis No: 10704622000267 Mot Expiry: June 2008
Launched in 1971, the R107-series SL was beautifully engineered. Notably rigid for a convertible, its two-door monocoque bodyshell was equipped with all-round independent suspension, power-assisted steering and four-wheel disc brakes. Lauded by the contemporary motoring press for its performance and refinement, the 500SL - flagship of the UK range - was unveiled in May 1980. Powered by a 4973cc (240bhp, 299lbft of torque) V8 engine mated to four-speed automatic transmission, it was reputedly capable of 140mph and 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds. In production for nine years, the model's fearsome price tag (it cost some £41,700 by 1989) ensured that only 11,817 were dispatched worldwide.
Finished in metallic gold with beige cloth upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Said to have spent the "first twenty-five years of its life in Guernsey" and to have undergone "a speedometer change at 6,000 miles", 'TBF 562W' has apparently covered just 18,500 miles from new (though, just 12,500 of these are shown on the replacement odometer). Riding on alloy wheels, it is further understood to benefit from a hardtop, radio / cassette player, electric windows and air-conditioning. Judged by the seller as "outstanding", this unusually low mileage R107 500SL is offered for sale with Guernsey ownership details, servicing records, handbooks and MOT certificate valid until June 2008.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
