The early seventies marked a period of change for the Rickman company. Lightweight scramblers were coming to dominate the sport resulting in declining sales for their Mettise scrambler frame kits, however, in this change the brothers recognised an opportunity to fulfil a long held desire to become manufacturers in their own right. This decision was taken in consultation with the American importer and resulted in the release of the Zundapp powered 125cc enduro and scrambler and the 250cc Rickman Montesa. With these machines well established in the States the company looked for other opportunities, one of which was the result of approaches made by British Police forces. The decline experienced by the British industry forced constabulary's to search for new suppliers with Rickman being approached to supply a triumph powered machine by Dorset Police. Based on the Metisse road racer frame and equipped with Rickman forks and disc brakes the machine was well received resulting in further orders from the Dorset constabulary as well as orders from Hampshire and West Mercia who specified the 8 valve head on some of their machines. In addition to the police orders the rolling chassis, suitably equipped was offered as a Cafe racer for triumph owners wishing to upgrade their machine.
The example offered was, according to a dating certificate issued by MRD Metisse, supplied to West Mercia Police on the 11th August 1972. At which time it was fitted with engine number 6T29731W that it retains today. The machine was acquired by the present owner following its restoration that was carried out by Cyril Malern of LTG Engineering in Dorset during 1997 and has subsequently seen only limited use. Presented in cafe' racer trim it is finished in blue and gold and is described as being in excellent condition. A Swansea V5C and the previously mentioned dating certificate accompany the motorcycle which has recently received some further cosmetic attention.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
