If you were to ask a non motorcyclist to name a Harley Davidson model the likely model given would be the Electra Glide. In many respects the big tourer epitomises Harley Davidson, big, brash and comfortable, it is the "American Dream" expressed in steel on two wheels. Developed from the Duo Glide and introduced in 1965, the new model derived its name from the electric starter motor fitted. The 1965 models lacked performance due to the weight increase resulting from the increased battery size and starter motor. This was remedied for the 1966 season when the Sporster style "shovelhead" engine replaced the "panhead" engine previously fitted bringing an increase in power output of 5bhp over the "pans" 55bhp.
This example dating from 1971 was, according to the owner, restored during 2000. It represents the last year of the drum braked version, front and rear discs being fitted for 1972. It is described as being mechanically sound with an excellent transmission, good electrics and cycle parts and excellent paintwork. Fully equipped with panniers, top box, footboards, fairing and spotlights it is an imposing tourer.
