Lot details Registration No: YJ 1806 Chassis No: H14722 Mot Expiry: Aug 2007
Introduced in 1934, the revamped Austin 12/4 range was distinguished by new more flowing wings, a sculpted radiator cowl and vents (in place of louvers) on its bonnet sides. Underpinned by a sturdy ladder frame chassis equipped with semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and four wheel drum brakes, it was available in a variety of open and closed guises. Powered by a torquey 1535cc four-cylinder sidevalve engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox, most 12/4s were capable of a reputed 65mph. A handsome six-light saloon design, the 'Ascot' De Luxe was priced at £204 (some sixteen pounds more than its 'Open Road' tourer sibling).
Finished in maroon over black with beige upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (1535cc engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment) or "very good" (interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork, wheels / tyres) condition. Reportedly treated to "a full restoration" since entering the current ownership during 1985, 'YJ 1806' is said to "drive well" especially "in the summer with the roof open". Riding on wire wheels, it is thought to have potential as a wedding car on account of its airy feel and four doors. A rare survivor, this charming 1930s Austin is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until August 22nd 2007 and historic class (free) road tax until July 31st 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
