Built on a 1930s-made Austin Seven short chassis and raced in the 1950s, the single-seater racer was acquired by a Howard Williams in 1970. Over a period of several years, the Abergavenny enthusiast then proceeded to restore the car and convert it to his own racing specification, which included a state of the art 2-bearing motor built by renowned A7 racer Jack French.
The owner tells us that the 750 competition car is currently freshly prepared and race-ready, and should also be eligible for a variety of historic and VSCC events, as well as 750 Motor Club meetings of course. Particularly innovative for its era, says the vendor, is the aerodynamic design of the radiator ducting and cooling system. Among other features are full alloy bodywork, lowered z-iron front axle, flattened front and rear springs, split and lightened front beam, underslung rear end, 4-speed gearbox with uprated clutch, heavy-duty friction shock absorbers, central foot pedals and extensively lightened chassis.
We understand that the crack-tested engine has a stress-relieved block, lightened and balanced internals, big valves, double valve springs, taper bored ports, full race camshaft, Speedex alloy cylinder head, large capacity sump in alloy, Dante log inlet manifold, modified Solex downdraught carburettor and ex-Riley engine distributor. Newly built, the engine will require running-in before being unleashed in anger and, says the vendor, should be lubricated with the correct specification of Castrol R.
This charming vehicle offers a low cost entry into vintage motorsport.
