In common with the Triumph 2000 it was developed from, the Stag was styled by Italian maestro Giovanni Michelotti and featured the monocoque construction, fully independent suspension, disc/drum brakes, power-assisted rack and pinion steering and driveline of that Saloon. The powerplant, however, was an all-new OHC V8 of 3-litre capacity, fed by a pair of Zenith Stromberg carburettors. The Stag received a warm reception at the time of launch in 1970. However, views quickly soured once it fell into the hands of customers. There were quibbles over build quality, the camshaft drive chains, cylinder heads, head gaskets, water pumps and waterways of the new V8 engine. Some owners resorted to removing the powerplants altogether - replacing them with the Rover V8, Ford V6 or Triumph's own six-cylinder engine. Cars which were modified in this way are now considered less desirable than unmolested ones. Moreover, as the years have gone by, restorers have solved the V8's problems. Had Triumph themselves managed to do so, not only would the engine have found its way into other of the company's models, but the Stag range would surely have lived a longer, more successful life. As it was, production ceased after some 26,000 examples had been produced.
This right-hand drive Triumph Stag left the factory in September 1974 equipped with manual gearbox and desirable overdrive. It features White coachwork complemented by a Black leather interior. It has apparently just benefited from a restoration and is certainly handsomely presented. It is these days equipped with a stainless steel exhaust system and rides on chrome wire wheels. The vendor currently considers the bodywork and engine to be "excellent", the engine bay to be "nice", the paintwork and chromework to be "lovely", the four-speed gearbox and overdrive to be "all good" and the interior trim to be both "very good and original". This delightful looking Stag is being sold complete with no less than 33 past MOT certificates, plus one valid for the full year to come. `SJF 964N' also comes with both hard and soft tops in "lovely condition". The odometer currently registers an unwarranted 116,000 miles. When fully sorted and reliable, these stylish Triumphs are a joy to own.
