Lot details Registration No: RB 9494 Chassis No: Z10469 Mot Expiry: April 2007
A derivative of the earlier 16/65 model, the Lagonda 3-litre was introduced in 1928. Progressively developed in line with its smaller 2-litre sibling, it made the transition from 'High Chassis' to 'Low Chassis' specification early the following decade. A somewhat conventional ladder-frame design equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes, it was nevertheless impeccably built. Powered by a 2931cc OHV straight-six engine allied to four-speed manual transmission, the model was a true thoroughbred (a point reinforced by Lord de Clifford's fine performances aboard a Works 3-litre on the 1932 RAC and Monte Carlo rallies). Priced accordingly, it enjoyed muted sales success but remained in production until 1934.
Finished in grey over silver with maroon leather upholstery, this particular example is said to have been owned by just two families from new. Beginning life as a standard 3-litre car albeit one clad in elegant four-door pillarless ST24A saloon coachwork (made by Lagonda under 'Silent Travel' patents), 'RB 9494' was apparently upgraded with its larger but contemporaneous (circa 1934/35) Lagonda 3.5 litre engine just after the Second World War. Purchased from its first keepers by the renowned and much missed enthusiast Herb Schofield in 2000, the Lagonda subsequently underwent a light renovation programme during 2000 - 2001 that saw it treated to new carpets throughout (including the boot), repolished interior woodwork, more imposing P100 headlights and some selective repainting. While mechanically, it benefited from a relined clutch and new fan mounting. Thought to be original, the saloon's upholstery is believed to have been connollised around the same time too. Inheriting 'RB 9494' in 2003, the vendor describes it as being in "good" condition with regard to its 3619cc engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. A rare survivor given the trend over recent decades for discarding saloon coachwork, the Lagonda has period charm aplenty. From its boot-mounted moulded spare wheel cover and split rear windscreen to its high-shouldered chrome radiator grille and tapering front wings, 'RB 9494' is beautifully detailed. Blessed with a stylish art-deco inspired cabin and with the promise of welcome extra performance, this marvellous Lagonda is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until April 25th 2007 and historic class (free) road tax until April 30th 2007. In keeping with the best traditions of the Lagonda Club whose badge it proudly wears, we are informed that 'RB 9494' will be driven to the auction.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
