Harley Davidson introduced their first 74 cubic inch, or 1200cc, "flathead" (side valve to the rest of the motorcycling community), vee twin at the end of the 1920's. Early models encountered some reliability problems but steady development ensured that by their second year of production the issues had been eradicated and the 74 series side valves established an enviable reputation for durability. The 74's proved popular with police forces in both the states and abroad as a consequence, continuing in production until 1948, despite the availability of the quicker over head valve "knucklehead" models.
This example, dating from the penultimate year of production, resided in South Africa until last year before being imported into the United Kingdom. Attractively presented in a black and white livery with some additional chrome plating, it was restored during 2006 by an engineer. It is offered with an Mot certificate and road fund licence valid until February 2008 and a South African logbook. It is hoped that a British registration number will have been issued for the motorcycle by the time of sale.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
