Unusually in automobile history, the Hudson Motor Car Company was named not after any of the marque's founders, but in recognition of the moneyman, one Joseph T Hudson, a Detroit merchant. Having been allied initially with Chalmers-Detroit, in 1910 Hudson introduced their first car, the Model 20, a $900 George Dunham engineered 4-cylinder roadster. Next, Hudson entered the 6-cylinder market with the 1912 Model 54 with its 6902cc sidevalve engine, which quickly justified the car maker's claim to be the 'World's Largest Builder of Six-Cylinder Cars'. Post the Wall Street Crash, which curtailed sales of Hudsons for a while, their 1934 season sixes were of 3475cc capacity and their eights 4164cc, producing 100 and 124bhp respectively.
Offered here is a 1936-built Hudson Eight, the 4-door sedan having been imported from New Zealand in 2000. We understand that the imposing 'suicide' door saloon - with twin sidemounted spare wheels and many delightful art deco styling features to bodywork and dash - will be driven to this auction.
The bodywork is claimed to be very good, having been in receipt of a bare metal repaint in red two years ago, and the tan leather interior also very good. The electrical equipment is reportedly all working and the radio is the original. The 5-litre 8-cylinder engine runs well, says the entrant, and the 3-speed manual transmission is OK too. With the car are logbook and MOT Test certificate, the latter current until next September.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
