The 'Best Car in the World' was built at Crewe from 1945 and the first monocoque range, the Silver Shadow, was launched in 1965. It came complete with all-independent suspension, disc brakes, power assisted everything, self-levelling and the claimed 'ultimate' build quality. All cars had the 6.75 litres from the summer of 1970 and came with the General Motors GM400 automatic transmission, were 17ft long, weighed 4800lbs unladen but could still achieve some 120mph top speed. Albeit at 12-14 miles to the gallon. The Shadow II was introduced in 1977 but of course the early models were only referred to as Shadow's by the factory as they could not be designated 'I' until the 'II' was launched.
