Instantly recognisable the world over, the Beetle's creation by Ferdinand Porsche in answer to Hitler's request for a 'people's car' is now sufficiently well documented not to need repeating here. Meticulously developed (over 78,000 modifications are said to have been made) but never significantly changed in appearance throughout its production life, the Beetle's primary strengths of simplicity, reliability and build quality ensured that it found a faithful following worldwide.
The archetypal wolf in sheep's clothing, this particular example is said to have been extensively modified while undergoing a "nut and bolt restoration". Porsche Type 4 derived, its 2.2 litre engine boasts "an oil cooler, Bosch ignition, 911-type fan / alternator, uprated barrels / pistons, reworked cylinder heads / valves and BAS exhaust system". While the unit's twin Dellorto DRLA 45 carburettors are fed by a high-capacity fuel pump. As well as "an upgraded long-ratio 1303 four-speed gearbox and Type 1 / 2 van clutch disc", we are informed that the Beetle further benefits from "an independent rear suspension kit, Koni steering damper, Sway-a-way adjusters, KYB gas sock absorbers and front disc brakes". Finished in period VW Kansas Beige with black vinyl upholstery, the level of care and attention lavished on the 'sleeper' conversion even extends to removable interior roll bars. An impressive piece of engineering that has been hailed as "a complete work of art", 'LGU 982K' is described by the vendor as being in "excellent overall" condition. Reputedly "great fun at the traffic light grand prix" where few if any rivals pick up on its altered stance, the car has featured in several VW magazines. Riding on innocent looking steel wheels, this uber-Beetle is offered for sale with sundry documentation.
