A slightly more upmarket rival to the ubiquitous Ford Model T, the Overland Model 90 was introduced in 1917. Marketed as 'The Car that Satisfies' the newcomer was based around a sturdy ladder-frame chassis equipped with all-round leaf-sprung suspension (semi-elliptic front / cantilever rear) and rear-wheel drum brakes. Credited with developing some 32bhp, its 2930cc four-cylinder sidevalve engine was allied to a three-speed sliding-gear transaxle. Well engineered, dependable and versatile, the Model 90 boasted such niceties as a radiator fan and leather-faced cone clutch (the latter incorporating spring pressed studs which facilitated gear changing). Equally at home on made or unmade roads, the Overland proved a strong seller.
Finished in green over black, this particular example wears open-drive limousine coachwork by an unknown maker. Riding on artillery wheels, it sports differing upholstery between the front and rear compartments as well as a spare tyre, centre gearchange and brass-rimmed headlights. On loan to the Osaka Sakai City Museum for the last fifteen years or so, the Overland has not run since being paraded through the city's streets and will therefore require recommissioning prior to use. A potentially rewarding project, this striking late Edwardian motorcar is offered for sale with customs clearance paperwork.
