The BMW R80 was introduced during 1977 as a replacement for the R75/7 although the two models continued to be offered in parallel for two years. In comparison to the earlier model the R80 benefited in an increase in capacity to 797cc from the 745 cc of the earlier machine resulting in a higher output of 55 bhp at 7,000rpm compared to the R75/7 output of 50bhp at 6,200 rpm. Possibly of more significance for the typical BMW owner was the increase in torque output which rose from 58.8NM at 5,000 rpm to 64NM at 5,500 rpm. The new models styling reflected that of the 1000cc twins with an attractive seat fairing combining with the fuel tanks lines to give a more integrated appearance and restyled rocker covers enhanced the appearance of the power unit. The R80 found favour with police forces around the world thanks to it's flexibility, stamina and reasonable performance.
This machine, according to the vendor, was originally supplied to the French Police and has been in the present owners possession for the last five years. It is described as being in good condition throughout having been restored over the last ten years. A Swansea V5c, and fresh Mot certificate accompany the machine which is equipped with a set of BMW panniers and a windscreen.
