One of the finest high speed luxury saloons that £22,000 could buy in the mid-1970s was the 1975-launched 450SEL Merc, the long-wheelbase version of the £11,000 450. Its 6.9-litre V8 was claimed to be virtually maintenance-free for the first 50,000 miles, was good for 0-60 mph in 7.2 sec and with up to 140 mph.
This right-hand driver on standard alloys left the Stuttgart works in 1977, being sold new by the Hong Kong Mercedes-Benz dealership, who carried out regular services. Following a part-exchange by the first owner, such was the fine condition that the dealership principal purchased it for his own use, bringing it back home with him on his return to the UK in 1992.
Current chassis, panels, hazel brown paintwork and creamy beige leather interior condition is reportedly good, 6854cc eight-cylinder engine in excellent order and four-speed automatic transmission and electrics good. The approximately 39,000 miles registering when entered is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total. The MOT is valid until August of next year.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
