Lot details Registration No: AEW540A Chassis No: 26002 Mot Expiry: March 2004
Founded in 1919, the Alvis company made its reputation in the 1920s by building the 12/50 sports and with its pioneering efforts with front wheel drive. The 1930s saw a change of direction to more luxury machinery such as the Speed 20 and 25, which were very close rivals to Bentley.
Offered here is 1959-built TD21 2-door convertible originally built for a member of the Whitbread brewing family. The car was reportedly laid up for years during this first ownership - hence the extremely low 24,713 miles displayed on the odometer when entered, which is claimed to be the genuine total mileage for this Coventry classic from new. It is due to this former Whitbread ownership that the car was originally painted in specially commissioned 'Whitbread Green' and the open Alvis is still painted in this colour to this day. The current owner tells us that he acquired this time warp car directly from the godson of the original owner.
The condition of the 2-door bodywork is described as sound, the green paintwork still original from 1959 much patinated and the beige leather original. Although the hood fabric does require some minor stitching, the carpets have been renewed. The electrical equipment appears to be good apparently apart from the fuel gauge which is said to be erratic. Clearly benefiting from low mileage, the 3-litre six and the 3-speed automatic transmission are reportedly both in good order. Tax disc and MOT are current until next March.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
