James started out making bicycles, producing their first motorcycle in 1902. During the 1930s, the Birmingham-based firm were manufacturing 4-stroke singles and large capacity v-twins, even a 499cc Rudge-engined bike. By 1937, however, all their engines were sourced from Villiers. Post-WW2, James production was all 2-stroke powered, the most notable models of that era being the 250cc Villiers singlepot Commodore and its 250cc twin-cylinder engined successor, the Superswift. Like so many Midland marques, James were a major player in trials, too, running a factory team for many seasons. Gobbled up by AMC in 1963, James production ceased for good when the group collapsed three years later.
On offer here is a 1959-manufactured Captain, a 200cc powered model which was the flagship for James at the time. Described by the vendor as a lovely little machine, it has been in receipt of a full restoration some years ago. Claimed to be absolutely correct and only ridden for around 18,000 miles, it is said to be an easy starter which is ready to use.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
