John Marston started building quality bicycles using the Sunbeam trademark in Wolverhampton in 1913 and Sunbeam motorcycle production started soon afterwards. Sunbeam soon excelled in competition, too, with TT wins in the Isle of Man in 1920, 1922, 1928 and 1929. By 1936, however, Sunbeam had been taken over by Associated Motor Cycles and remaining stocks of Wolverhampton-made parts were assembled in the AMC Matchless works at Plumstead. Unwanted post-war, AMC disposed of the brand to BSA, who made a new line-up of Sunbeam twins.
This Sunbeam 6 Lion was made in 1930, the 500cc single-cylinder bike is said by the vendor to be still as per original factory specification. He tells us that the chain-drive machine has been only recently restored with frame, paint and brightwork all said to be good from 2003 work. Sidevalve motor and transmission are reportedly in good order as is the magdyno which has been reconditioned. The current MOT is valid until next August.
Sadly, the once famous Sunbeam name ended up on a BSA scooter, disappearing completely in 1964.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
