"The marvellous hill-climber . . . Least petrol consumption of any three-seated car in the market . . . Speedy, reliable and simple" (1902 advertisement for the Rochet Voiturette by 'The New Automobile Co', Shaftesbury Avenue, London)
Operating from premises at 74 Rue de la Folie-Regnault, 74, Paris XI, the Automobiles Rochet Company introduced the Voiturette Type D in 1902. Already responsible for a wide range of 6hp, 8hp and 12hp models its latest addition was powered by a 4½hp Aster engine mated to a two-speed Bozier gearbox with cone clutch. A well resolved design with a conventional steering wheel, front-mounted underslung radiator and wire wheels, it did much to live up to The New Automobile Co.'s hype.
Finished in red with maroon upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in good condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, chassis, interior trim, paintwork and bodywork. Wearing Vis-à-Vis coachwork by Bergeon et Cie Carrossiers of Bordeaux, it is reported that "much of the chassis and bodywork retains its original paintwork and coachlining". Still believed to be on its first hood, it sports an imposing Alpha acetylene main headlamp and Phares Besnard oil side lamps. Treated last year to new rims and re-spoking (on existing refurbished hubs) by Specialist Automobile Services Ltd, its wire wheels were also shod with fresh tyres. Said to have "attended local and Veteran Car Club rallies including the Creepy Crawly Rally" and to have "successfully completed the last two London-Brighton runs", this appealing Rochet is registered with the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain under dating certificate number 2240. Offered for sale with a "confirmed entry" into this year's London-Brighton run, it also comes with MOT certificate valid until 27th October 2005.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
