Lot details Registration No: 8368 BY Chassis No: CRH30027 Mot Expiry: April 2008
Named after a region famous for its twisting roads and picture postcard scenery, the Corniche fixed head was introduced in 1971. Styled in-house by Bill Allen, it was available in both Rolls-Royce and Bentley guises. Considerably more expensive than its humbler four-door brethren, it also proved more involving to drive thanks to the provision of firmer springs, thicker anti-roll bars and revised steering geometry. Conceived as a high-speed express capable of covering great distances with minimal effort, its cocooning four-seater cabin was bedecked in soft hides, plush carpets and beautifully finished wood veneers. Further enhanced by a tuned, low-loss exhaust version of Crewe's staple 6750cc V8 engine mated to automatic transmission its self-levelling rear suspension and plethora of electric motors made for an enjoyably cosseting experience. Visually distinguished by its alloy / rubber bumpers and front air-dam, the Corniche II fixed head arrived in 1977. Featuring revised front suspension geometry, split level air-conditioning and sharper power-assisted rack and pinion steering, it remained in production until 1982. Reassuringly exclusive, just 1,108 Corniche fixed heads are thought to have been made during the model's eleven year lifespan.
Finished in gold with a dark chocolate brown everflex roof and matching leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Reputedly supplied new to Sir Nigel Lipton of Stanhope Developments, '8368 BY' is understood to have been cosmetically restored by a previous owner (respray, re-connollised upholstery, new roof covering, refurbished brightwork etc). Riding on polished alloy wheels shod with slimband whitewall tyres, the Rolls-Royce boasts "an upgraded CD / Radio music system and massive history file including two service books with a total of seventeen stamps". Said to have covered just 75,000 miles from new, the seller feels that it would be "hard to find a better example". An imposing motorcar, '8368 BY' is offered for sale with "Rolls-Royce book pack", MOT certificate valid until April 26th 2008 and road tax until June 30th 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
