"From the door-tops down, convertibles are like other Thunderbirds - but what a difference up above! When you flick the switch it lowers automatically and stows completely out of sight into a hidden compartment back aft under the rear deck. No top boots to snap. No unsightly bulges. Not a hint that there even was a top. And if you want to be sportier still, there's an optional molded tonneau cover which fits over the rear seat and converts the Convertible into a snappy roadster." (Ford Buyer's Digest of New Car Facts, 1964)
Introduced and completely restyled for the 1964 model year, the fourth-generation Thunderbird (nicknamed the 'Flair Bird') was the market leader ahead of rivals such as the Buick Riviera and the Pontiac Grand Prix with a longer bonnet featuring a larger power scoop, highly sculptured side panels and a more aggressive front end. Based around a monocoque chassis equipped with coil-sprung independent front suspension, a semi-elliptic leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle and power brakes, it was powered by a 390ci (6.4litre) OHV V8 and boasting better sound insulation than its predecessors, the 'Flair Bird' was capable of a reputed 120mph.
This particular example, although not pristine, does benefit from a large £6000 bill in 2004 for a brand new 'crate' engine and new exhaust system from the USA which were fitted by the American specialist 'Dart'. The paintwork is finished in red with the matching red leather interior and although a small amount of recommissioning may be needed it is a rare opportunity for someone and estimated very sensibly considering the prices these cars are now achieving over the water.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle has an MOT certificate until May 2007.
