Few machines can match the history or achievements of the Manx Norton. A mainstay of the Grand Prix Circus in the 1950's and 60's, winning races against technically far more advanced machines and a dominant force in National and club events during the same period, the Manx has gone on to be one of the mainstays of today's classic competitions.
This example was purchased by the vendor approximately 25 years ago. At the time of purchase the rolling chassis was fitted with a disc front brake and a Triumph engine. The factory records indicate that the frame was one of a batch of Manx frames built in 1962 numbered from 10M 102727 to 10M 102817, unfortunately a hole drilled in the frame to enable the fitment of the Triumph engine destroyed the 2 middle digits of the frame number. Having purchased the machine the vendor sourced a 350cc Manx engine, gearbox, clutch, carburettor, magneto and exhaust system of 1957/58 manufacture which he installed in the rolling chassis. At the same time a conical twin leading shoe brake replaced the disc system previously employed.
With the machine returned to Manx specification the vendor raced the motorcycle at Pembrey, Mallory and Oulton Park, in vintage and classic events for a couple of years before retiring. The engine was then sent to Phil Kettle for overhaul, during the course of which a new big end and piston rings were fitted together with any other components that were needed. Reunited with the rolling chassis the Manx did one more race at Pembrey with the vendor in the saddle before being laid up. It is described as being in good condition throughout having been sympathetically stored since its last competitive outing at Pembrey.
