Lot details Registration No: RSU 131 Chassis No: 206746DW Mot Expiry: May 2005
It was in 1956 that Jaguar brought out a brand new generation of smaller sporting saloons, no longer with separate chassis and bodies, but employing unitary construction bodyshells. The first model in a long line was fitted with a 2.4-litre 6-cylinder engine based on the legendary XK motor, which powered both the legendary XK120 of 1951-1955 and the newly launched XK140 replacement, though with shorter stroke.
Very soon, the 2.4 MkI saloon was joined by a 3.4-version, and then the restyled and disc-braked Mk2 came to market. With wider rear track, much thinner roof pillars and greater glass area vastly improving all-round visibility, and 2.4, 3.4 or 3.8 engine options, the Mk 2 quickly became the definitive sports saloon of the 1960s.
This 1962 Mk2 3.8 with manual gearbox and the desirable overdrive was previously registered and used in South Africa before being repatriated to the home country in 1989. The vendor tells us that he acquired the Coventry-manufactured righthand drive 4-door in 1991, by when the seat leather within had already been renewed.
The current state of the bodyshell and panels is described as excellent with BRG paintwork and red leather interior also still good. The 3787cc 6-cylinder motor and 4-speed manual gearbox with overdrive are reportedly also in good order. When entered, the odometer read 96,871 miles which is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total for the car from new.
