Universal was founded in 1928 initially producing motorcycles under the Helvetia trademark before adopting the Universal name. Early models employed engines from proprietary suppliers with JAP, Python Anzani and Ilo all being employed. As the company became established they developed their own power-plants, supplying side valve vee twins using engines of their own manufacture to the Swiss Army. During the post war years the developed an attractive 248cc over head valve single introduced during 1956 and the model for which they are probably best known outside of their native Switzerland, the 578cc flat twin as offered here.
The 578cc engine had a bore and stroke of 72 x 71mm with overhead valves delivering a respectable 30 bhp, comparable to rival machines such as the BMW R69. A single carburettor fed the alloy heads and iron cylinders were employed. A four speed gearbox and shaft final drive were employed and full width hubs graced both wheels. The duplex cradle frame was equipped with plunger rear suspension and telescopic forks.
This example appears to have been restored to a high standard and is attractively presented with black paintwork. A suppliers plate mounted on the machine suggests that it was originally sold in Lyon. It is offered with Spanish papers.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
