The Piaggio industrial group was devastated by the consequences of World War 2. Amongst the projects muted to rescue the company was an idea to help mobilise the Italian public with a new transport concept ‘The motor scooter’. From the launch in 1946 it was such a success that it has become a symbol of taste, fashion and style and is one of the favourite global design icons of all time, The Vespa.
The Rally 200 made between 1972 and 1979 is much sought after by collectors due to its excellent and powerful performance coupled with attractive lines. Just over 41700 were produced. The Rally also known as the queen of Vespas was a large performance step up from the earlier models of the 1960s. The 180 versions were well received for their performance and appearance. The 200 was similar to the Rally 180 but with a larger capacity cylinder capable of producing over 10hp and crankcase modifications were made necessary to accommodate that. There was also a new FEMSA electronic unit and the Rally 200 was produced in a range of vibrant colours in tune with the fashions of the 1970’s. The later Rally 200s featured the Ducati electronic ignition and these are the most coveted version of this classic.
This very late example was registered new on the 1st April of 1979 by the dealers John Redford of Bury and sold new on this date to a Duncan Wood of Rochdale. Within just a few months on the 25th June of 1979, it was acquired by David Gordon Brooks who is described as a solicitor, barrister and Deputy Judge in the supplied documents. On the various insurance documents in the information file Mr Brooks declared a limited mileage policy per year including only 200 miles in 2002. On the 15th June of 2000 the mileage shows only 2,635 miles on the MOT and 2,927 miles on 13th June of 2002. Our vendor acquired the vehicle on 10th June of 2006 and has seldomly used it himself. The MOT on 4th May, 2007, shows 3,090 miles, in 2008 3,314 miles and the final MOT dated 27th July 2009 shows 3,730 miles. The first Blue registration V5 document is present, noting both of the previous owners.
Upon examination, the scooter is in truly remarkable original untouched condition. The original paint is in exceptional condition all over and there are no touch-ups that we could see anywhere on the machine. There is some paint lift on the floor under the Diamant accessory floor mat, near to the floor strips, as is usual on Vespas of this age. This scooter has quite evidently been cosseted over a very long time, to remain in this condition. The original John Redford dealer sticker is still in place. Even the original factory paper frame number sticker is still in place to the right side of the side leg shields. All of the original keys are present save the steering lock key. All over the scooter we can see that it is in completely original condition with no replacement parts ever necessary except the horn. We understand that the accessories: crash bars, flip flop back rest, floor mat, Florida bars, mudflap, and Feridax flyscreen were all fitted new at purchase. The scooter also still has its original Vespa tool bag. The original metal battery top and parts of the Florida bars are also present and supplied with the scooter. Although it has been stored largely unused in a collection, we were able to see the scooter start easily on first kick but would recommend a basic service to optimise performance. There are a number of supplied documents including the original Blue registration V5 document from 1979, a tax disc from 1984 and a large number of MOTs that support mileage verification. Also supplied is the original Vespa Douglas log book. There is also an original Rally 200 operation and maintenance manual in English. As an in-demand model, with full low owner history, such low mileage and in such unmolested original condition, we expect significant interest in this scooter.
